“The upper limit of 87 litres per person and the overall target of 500 million litres per day of collective consumptions remain in place, however, there is now a new emphasis on capping excessive water use at the domestic household level and placing additional restrictions on the commercial sector.
“All users, whether in the domestic or commercial sector, are required to remain vigilant with regard to water use and, if curtailment of consumption is required, then they are to begin doing so immediately,” according to the City.

The City of Cape Town has developed a water calculator to help residents figure out how much water they use every day doing normal ‘household’ things including showering, dishes, laundry etc.
So what does 87 litres per day get you?
According to the water calculator
* Three toilet flushes (27 litres). The city has recommended that people “only flush when necessary”.
* Wash the dishes once (9 litres).
* Wash your hands and face once (3 litres ).
* A 2-minute shower (20 litres)
* Prepare two cooked meals (1.2 litres).
* Drink seven glasses of water (1.75 litres).
This adds up to around 60 litres.
